In a Valley of Violence is written and directed by Ti West. It stars Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransome, Karen Gillan and John Travolta. Music is by Jeff Grace and cinematography by Eric Robbins.<br/><br/>Ethan Hawke plays Paul, an ex soldier accompanied only by his dog, Abbie, who is drifting across the desert towards Mexico. Stopping off in the dying town of Denton, Paul finds trouble that will have consequences for himself and town alike.<br/><br/>Ti West is more well known for his horror ventures, where although divisive in that genre sphere, he can be proud of his success rate. Here he tackles the Western, and true to form, he homages past genre masters whilst unmistakably putting his own stamp on things. Opening with credits straight out of Spaghetti Western land, and introducing us to a musical score that will accompany the story that is wonderfully feverish, West is in no hurry for blood and bone shenanigans. He always favours the slow burn and so it proves here.<br/><br/>There's nothing remotely new here, it's a standard tale of a gunman - one damaged by his war efforts - who through circumstance is forced to abandon his hope of a quiet life. He's a loner man of few words, thus giving viewers a classic Western character staple, an anti-hero to root for and for us to yearn for him to find peace. When the violence comes, it's sharp and bloody, but often there is humourwell, deftly inserted into proceedings, whilst the canine is skillful and a key character to all and sundry.<br/><br/>Perfs are more than adequate. Hawke sifts seamlessly into being a believable drifter type of complexity, Ransome is annoyingly brattish, but that's actually job well done, and Travolta - sporting a wooden leg - gets better once (and if) you buy into him in this setting. Gillan isn't given much to do, but lands some decent emotive punches, but it's Farmiga who stands outMary-Anne. She's utterly infectious and thankfully she gets a well written part, that of a young woman trying to hold her own in the most trying of township circumstance.<br/><br/>The purpose built town of Denton looks just that!, but this is off- set a touch by the nice location landscapes (Santa Fe, New Mexico), and with the story working from solid genre foundations then this is a pleasure - without pulling up any trees - for fans of such. 7/10
Glad I ignored the haters and watched this movie. This was a unique kind of western with some techniques I've never seen before, yet it kept much of the flavor of a 60's western. John Travolta should do more westerns because it fit him really well. He was a natural at itif he had just stepped out of Tombstone. E.H. was great too. A great western and I didn't want it to end I liked it so much. A must see movie!
Ti West's In a Valley of Violence plays like a grim, Eastwood-style genre revival before some conspicuous Tarantino-influenced humor infects its climactic showdown.
Paul (Ethan Hawke) a drifter and his dog Abbie arrive in a town called Denton, which the local townspeople call "A Valley of Violence" and they decide to stop in town for supplies and water, before leaving town and continuing riding on to Mexico. At the town's local tavern, Gilly Martin (James Ransome) the town's arrogant local Deputy forces Paul to fight him and threatens to shoot Abbie, if he refuses to fight and outside the tavern, Paul fights Gilly and beats him up in front of Gilly's snobby wife Ellen (Karen Gillan) and the townspeople. At the local hotel run by Ellen's sister Mary-Anne (Tarisma Farmiga), Paul is visited by the town's marshal Clyde (John Travolta) whom happens to be Gilly's father and speaks with Paul about the fight and orders Paul to leave town and move on and Clyde orders Gilly to leave Paul alone. But, Gilly decides to ignore Clyde and Gilly attacks Paul and leaves for him dead and Gilly kills Abbie. Paul returns to Denton and is determined to seek revenge upon Gilly. Aided by Mary-Anne, Paul sets off on a killing spree and picks off Gilly's men one by one. When Clyde learns from Mary-Anne that Gilly attacked Paul and killed Abbie and that Gilly disobeyed him and that the murders of Gilly's men is the consequence of his Gilly's own actions. Clyde is forced to take matters into own hands and knowing Paul won't stop until Gilly is dead and he sets out to plead with Paul to put a stop to the killings and not to kill Gilly and Clyde orders Gilly to protect Mary-Anne and Ellen. But, Gilly again decides to ignore his father and sets out to kill Paul, which soon results in a bloody confrontation.
